Most people don't think to train their lower backs. If you are working your abs, you should also be working your lower back. If your abs become stronger that your lower back, it could cause problems.
If you do have lower back problems or to prevent problems, here are a couple exercises that will help you strengthen those muscles.
* Plank - This can be done on elbows or on hands (like in push up position)

I hate the bird dog, makes me feel like I am doing nothing LOL!! I'm sure it is helpful. Maybe I am just doing it wrong hahaha
1I used to think the same thing when I first started doing it. Like when doing the plank, make sure you are contracting your abs. When changing to opposite arms and legs, try to move your back as little as possible, while contracting your abs. You will get the hang of it and believe me, it does work!
2Thanks for the tips! I recently started taking Pilates and my lower back really aches afterwards. Do you think I should try doing these exercises for a week or two before starting up with Pilates again?
3I think doing them along with the pilates will be good. Most pilates work is core work and if you add these you will be working your lower back and core at same time, you will avoid injury and making both stronger so you don't have back pain. But if the back pain continues, I would give it a rest for a week, while still doing these exercises....good luck!
